VNC viewer/server issues
I have set up a VNC viewer on my laptop (Win7) and VNC server on our lab computer (linux) using www.tightvnc.com software. I can see the Terminal from the viewer and run programs from the viewer, but I want to be able to see my Desktop and be able to pan through images quickly (vs. using Secure Shell and having to download each file). How can I make this happen? [It works fine the other way - I can see everything as is from my laptop to the linux machine.]

Re: VNC viewer/server issues
My bet is that in the VNC setup on the Linux machine has only the active window set to shared and not the entire desktop. From my experiences with TightVNC, you can select a specific window, a specified screen area, or the whole desktop.

Re: VNC viewer/server issues
I'm a little confused as to what Xnvc http://www.tightvnc.com/Xvnc.1.php is versus vncserver http://www.tightvnc.com/vncserver.1.php . Maybe that is my problem.
When I try Xvnc I get this:
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running
Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running <-- still shows up when I kill all running X servers
Too lazy to Google this...

Teamviewer
I personally like using Teamviewer instead of TightVNC. I haven't used it with Linux yet, but supposedly there's a Linux version that was released earlier this month. You can use Teamviewer on Windows, Mac, or Linux computers and you can use the program without installation or through a browser on any computer. It's super convenient, and there's also options for desktop sharing for presentations and VoIP. Check it out! It's free!
